Position Summary
 
Reporting to the Production Supervisor, the Mill Lead will be responsible for the day-to-day operations for the Milling area.
 
The ideal candidate will have the responsibility to achieve productivity, efficiency, cost, quality and safety objectives through both individual and team contributions. Provides direction, leadership, development, and support to associates through empowerment, teamwork, continuous improvement projects and initiatives. Promotes safe work practices and develops and maintains an effective organization with qualified personnel.
 
Position Responsibilities
 
  • Advising Management of manpower needs.
  • Orientation of new employees on their shift.
  • Train employees of their shift in job duties.
  • Refer to Management any cases requiring disciplinary action.
  • Make work assignments within own shift.
  • Report to Management any employees work performance issues.
  • Ensure Food Safety by performing required checks and documentation.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues.
  • Maintain standards of cleanliness and equipment efficiency.
  • Identifies all issues in the Milling process and resolves issues in a timely manner.
  • Supports continuous improvement goals in safety and quality.
  • Responsible for creating an engaged and team-oriented work force.
  • Responsible for maintaining a positive and safe work environment.
  • Manages Mill staff to attain Mill and quality goals.
  • Ensures all indirect materials are available as needed to maintain production schedule.
  • Assist in the orientation of new and returning employees.
  • Assist in training of all employees.
  • Represent Management in their absence and ensure that they are contacted should an issue or incident arise requiring their immediate attention.
  • Report any employee issues in regard to performance to Management.
  • Regularly communicate any issues, department goals and pertinent information to employees.
  • Monitor operation and make recommendations allowing department to safely operate at maximum efficiency with a focus on quality. 
  • Conduct departmental informational meetings.
  • Instruct employees on their prospective job assignments based on quality and quantity of product being produced.
  • Responsible for lock out and securing all equipment in the department for repairs and cleaning.
  • Responsible for training personnel on the emergency shutdown procedure.
  • Schedule, approve and manage all time off requests.
  • Monitor the timeliness of breaks and lunches.
  • The Mill lead on each shift will be responsible for keeping track of product spillage, scrap and metal detector reject pounds.
  • Make adjustments to equipment should quality be out of specification as notified by Q.A.
  • Each Mill Lead will be responsible for ensuring the net drum weight for each product is within their required specified weights.
  • Record results in the “Mill Monitoring and Verification Checklist”.
  • Each Mill Lead will be responsible for ensuring that each spout location has a Mill Monitoring and Verification Checklist, as well as, verifying and signing off that each Spout Attendant is properly filling out required information in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with Q.A. should there be any product issues.
  • Ensure that that Mill has sufficient product labels for daily operation.
  • Regularly monitor and calibrate weigh scales on each shift to ensure proper weights are being achieved.
  • On Tuesdays during wash down, the “day shift” lead is responsible for performing “Mill Washdown/Extended Downtime Day” inspection form.  
  • Perform daily sanitation inspection at the beginning of each shift and complete the “Mill Department Daily Operational Sanitation Inspection” form.
  • Perform Mill color sorter checks every “4 hours” and complete “Mill Color Sorter Check” form.
  • This position is not limited to those duties in the job description. Duties and responsibilities can be changed, expanded, reduced, or deleted to meet the business needs of the organization.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
 
 
Position Requirements
 
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in English. Bi-Lingual Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to stand on feet for extended periods of time.
  • Basic mechanical knowledge of the processing and Mill areas.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and measurement principles.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and noisy production environment.
  • Ability to work overtime and other shifts as needed.
  • Must be self-motivated and willingness to learn.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and make difficult decisions during critical situations.
  • Capable of operating all equipment and machinery required of the job.
  • Capable of lifting 50 lbs. consistently throughout a shift.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with co-workers, management, department Leads and carriers.
  • Ability to work in fast paced and noisy production environment.
  • Ability to take direction and work in a team driven atmosphere.
  • Ability to wear all appropriate PPE.
  • Successful Completion of Powered Industrial Truck Certification Training.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics and measurement principles.
  • PC knowledge helpful.
  • MUST be available to work extended days and hours during the production season (approximately May through October).
  • Strong team player - good communication (written and verbal), follow-up skills, attention to detail and the ability to train others in all applicable warehouse functions.
