Position Summary
Reporting to Director of Quality & Technical Services, the Quality Assurance Compliance Specialist: Regulatory Compliance, will be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) of all things Regulatory supporting Technical and Commercialization teams in their role in SKU commercialization through the development pipeline, particularly food labeling compliance, materials compliance for specific projects, ensuring ingredient suppliers meet documentation and regulatory requirements, and ensuring that packaging and labels meet regulatory requirements for the Market in which they are sold.
The ideal candidate will enjoy the challenge of participating in the creation and execution of new and improved products, have a commitment to compliance, and an independent, entrepreneurial attitude. They will be ready to take ownership of disparate functions of regulatory compliance across multiple teams to support the Private Label business.
Position Responsibilities
- Acts as expert on food legislation and guidelines issued by global regulatory authorities – with a focus on US and Canada.
- Interprets legislation requirements, shares industry best practices, and recommends regulatory positions on product composition, ingredient and food labeling requirements.
- Develops and maintains regional procedures to approve product formulas, ingredients, labels, and other marketing material aligned with business requirements.
- Supports business partners (procurement, Innovation, Marketing, etc.) on new product development, product reformulations, product claims exploration, and label redesigns as needed to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Conducts regulatory risk assessments (regulatory investigation, data collection, industry calibration, etc.) in collaboration with cross-functional teams – QFS, Legal etc.
- Monitors and communicates regional emerging legislation to QFS on microbiological parameters, food contaminants, and Food Safety Management programs as required.
- Advocates and sponsors training initiatives to support cross-functional team members and their contribution to regulatory compliance for continued efficiency and accuracy.
- Reviews technical information related to ingredients, product formulations, methods of preparation, nutrition analyses, allergens, etc. for compliance, accuracy and completeness, and advises Innovation, Marketing, and QFS on related inquiries.
- Provides the Private Label Business unit with regulatory guidance related to soft and hard claims for promoting various ingredient and/or nutritional attributes of new / existing products.
- Works collaboratively with cross‐functional stakeholders to deliver on product commercialization plans to meet internal initiatives and customer timelines.
- Be the voice of Regulatory Compliance during project kick-off meetings to ensure products are designed with regulations in mind.
- Support the packaging design process by reviewing claims, romance copy and artwork formatting.
- Review and approve regulated label information for new products and packaging changes.
- Works directly with our internal Procurement, Vendor Management and Quality teams to ensure proper documentation of all incoming materials is obtained from suppliers, prior to approval.
- Utilize software to generate ingredient lists and nutrition panels for products and to ensure product recipes adhere to the Regulations and are approved prior to production.
- Participate in Food Safety Meetings and Foreign Supplier Verification
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Strong understanding of Regulatory Compliance landscape (FDA and USDA) for North America, and as well as foundational understanding of regulatory compliance landscape of international markets.
- A team player with well‐developed “people interaction” skill set.
- Strong system skills, including the ability to work with MS Office (specifically excel), SAP (specifically ECP and RD), and Genesys.
- Proactive and performance driven, have a bias for action and be able to work under pressure in a fast paced, dynamic environment, with multiple projects and multiple deadlines.
- University degree in a related discipline, e.g. Food Science, Nutrition Science or Regulatory Affairs
- 2+ years of previous experience in a Regulatory Compliance role..
The pay for this role in the state of CA ranges from $68-88k and is based on the position responsibilities and geographic location. Actual pay within this range may be determined based on candidate’s experience, qualifications and/or other determining factors.
